Easy-to-understand and fewer overall ingredients are becoming the focus of confection giants such as Nestle USA and Hershey. Announcing this commitment in February 2015, both companies reflect a growing food trend towards selecting products containing simple and non-artificial ingredients. The challenge is for companies to maintain taste and quality in the process.

Nestle’s planned reformulation includes such moves as using annatto instead of Red 40 and Yellow 5 in Butterfinger products and replacing artificial vanillin with natural vanillin in Crunch products.

Hershey will begin sourcing ingredients such as milk from cows not treated with rBST and non-bioengineered sugar in its existing product-lines. It will also be creating a new line which contains no high-fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors or artificial colors.
